GAMSAT Test “Biology” A Sneak Peek Of Our Second Test: BSS 02

GAMSAT Section III is about Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences. In keeping wit the GAMSAT standard and pattern, Test Booklet BSSO2 is comprised of multiple choice questions (MCQs) in which the aspirant has to detect the correct option using his/her reasoning skills, based on strong conceptual knowledge in the concerned topics. Some of the most important topics of GAMSAT Biological Sciences syllabus are covered in this Test booklet which has 10 units. An aspirant will learn how to answer most of the questions within the limited time allotted, thus getting a virtual feeling of sitting the GAMSAT itself. Getting themselves familiar with the GAMSAT environment is the most important key to success in GAMSAT. The units given in this Test Booklet can be classified into 3 main divisions according to their difficulty level; a high scoring section of pure Logical Reasoning questions, moderately-easy Concept-based Reasoning questions, and a few really difficult pure Concept-based questions.

PrepGenie advices GAMSAT aspirants to spend the first few minutes of the Test in reading the Units and questionnaire and then selecting the questions which are easy for them to answer. The time-constraint of the Test should always be kept in mind. Don’t spend too much time in answering a single question.

Candidates who do not possess Biology background need to get an average score here, as they can score higher in the Humanities Section or Physical Sciences Section. But for aspirants with Biology background, this is their main scoring Section.

Executive Summary

We present a table before the aspirants, explaining the difficulty level and types of questions distributed in the 9 units.

Table 1

*Note: This Data-Table has been worked out on expert’s view over how the Average student would have taken the Test and scored, accordingly.

Type 1: Logical Reasoning

These types of questions have been the main scoring area for most students (particularly from non-biological background) in the recent GAMSAT test papers. The questions can be broadly classified as:

Table 2

Out of the 8 questions in the Logical Reasoning division, 7 questions can be attempted assuming 80% accuracy within the time-limit of 15 mins. Candidates with non-biological background can answer these questions without any difficulty.

Type 2: Concept-based Reasoning

This section contains slightly difficult questionnaire in the way that it requires a clear understanding of the basic concept of the concerned subjects. Based on their understanding of the concerned topics, the aspirants can select the correct options using their logical reasoning. The questions are classified as:

Table 3

Hence, out of the 17 questions based on Concept-based Reasoning, an average student can attempt 10 based on their knowledge in the topics and assume 60% accuracy. Aspirants who do not have a Biology background would find these questions a bit difficult, but manageable.

Type 3: Pure Concept-based

These types of questions consist of schematic diagrams, passages or statement based questions which require in-depth knowledge on the topics to answer. The explanations given here in the passages or diagram are not enough to get a clear understanding. The questions can be broadly classified as:

Table 4

Here, only 5 out of the 15 questions can be possibly attempted within the limited time-frame (assuming 40% accuracy of an average candidate). Non-biology background aspirants will find these type of questions very difficult to answer.

Overall Analysis:

If we consider 19 out of 40 to be a representative average score on the Test Booklet BSSO2, then we can express the performance of an aspirant for this Test in the following bands:

Table 5

* Note: Comfort-level to individual questions are subjective to individual aspirants. For Non-biological background aspirants, an Average band denotes their good performance.

All the best from the team of PrepGenie.
